Ideally, every sexually active woman should have one, but in this world of a hundred different unique situations of life, not everyone will.
The most common advice you will get is to choose an OB GYN you feel you can trust and will be comfortable with. Well, yes it is quite important, but you will not be able to tell if you find someone first, right?
Here are a few pointers and tips to help you along:
1.Create a list of ob GYN specialists in your area. Between your mother and girlfriend (s), you'll have a good list of OB GYN physicians, All highly recommended. BUT! You want only those close to you, because you expect to visit them quite regularly and you will not want to be driving long distances in your state. AND! It would not hurt to add to your list.
- Request name The board certified ob-gynecologists local medical society, or check with the American College of obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Their acog.org Internet / offers a database to help you identify ob-gynecologists in your area. These two methods are quite impersonal, and how pregnancy is a very, very personal issue, most women will not bother. It will also require much more research on your part, but in any case, it is good to know they are there.
- Ask your health insurance carrier limitations of your plan. Can you choose your own OB-GYN or they will limit you to their list of recommendations?
2.Now trim down this list according to your doctor's personal preferences, including but not limited to:
- Gender. Remember, an OB-gynecologist is male necessary to have a female nurse present during gynecological examinations.
- Opening. It would be pointless to consider those ob-gyns who do not have openings for new patients. A quick call to the OB GYN clinic must give you this information. And while you're on this call, find out which hospital (s) gives the doctor.
- Reputation. Check for any malpractice suits or disciplinary measures. These types of information, available from most state health departments, including suspension or revocation of a medical license OB-GYN in another state and / or involvement in any sexual abuse.
- Credentials. So if this ob-GYN no skeletons in his closet medical, how about with feathers in his cap? If the OB-GYN is a recognized authority in the field, or is quite famous for some other reason (good), and if it matters for you, then go ahead and find all the awards and recognitions he has ever received.
3.Create a list hospitals. Consider the following:
- Proximity. Is it within a comfortable distance from your home or workplace.
- Facilities and Policy. Check that they are important to you. Is one of those big hospitals where you can get lost in, or is a private, family practice? Does it have a state of the art NICU? Are there facilities to support alternative methods birth? How good is his neonatal / perinatal care, etc.
- Your Health Plan coverage. Will your health plan cover your offering there, or will you have to cough up your money?
4.Cross match your doctors against your hospitals. Perhaps some by ob-gyns in your list are not affiliated with the hospitals, you want to submit to, so you must remove them from running. Most doctors, however, will have privileges at multiple hospitals, so you should be able to find a few good matches and finally come up with a short.
5.Meet doctors on your list. Nothing could be interaction your personal will be obstetrician gynecologist. By the end of your visit, you will have a very good idea if you want go back or not. Ask these questions and then some:
- What birthing methods they promote and practice? Traditional-gut-wrenching-I-want-to-experience-of-pain-and-motherhood method? Bradley or Lamaze? Epidural? C-sections only? New methods in age as yoga, hypnosis, water birth, acupressure, etc.? You need to be able to talk to your doctor about this issue, as it should be one of the main factors that will influence the choice your one-ob Gyn.
- Are they available to take phone calls during emergencies? If not, who will cover for them? Are they reliable?
- Does the OB-GYN with others in a practice? Ask to meet all members ee if the team has a chance at all that they have involved in your care. When the time comes for you to offer, you will not want to be in the hands of a complete stranger. This is the reason you all the trouble this country first.
6.Think back, review your notes and be ready to make a decision.
- What do you think about-gyns ob you met? Professional satisfaction? Suddenly? Creamy? Mother? Father? Drill sergeant-like? Curt? Patient? Do not smile a bit? There a false smile fixed in?
- Were you comfortable? To whom do you think you can trust?
- Were you given enough time to ask all your questions or can not expect them to allow you to leave so the next patient can come in?
- How other clinic staff treat you? Were they effective? Were they friendly and respect?
- Overall, do you have a sure pleasure visit?
- Will you go back to this OB-GYN again?
7.Go with your gut-feel. Choosing an OB-GYN for you and your child should be done from the heart. Be sure why you are making an informed decision.
